AMERICA/CHILE - Prayer vigils and masses all over the country to celebrate the legacy of John Paul II ; new edition of “He stays with us” book on the Pope’s visit to Chile in 1987

Santiago de Chile (Fides Service) - Catholics all over Chile will remember Pope John Paul II with prayer vigils and masses on the first anniversary of his passing to the Home of the Father. On Sunday 2 April Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz, archbishop of Santiago will preside a special Mass in the cathedral. The archdiocese of Santiago on the occasion of this 1st anniversary has issued a new edition of a book “He stays with Us” on the figure and the teaching of Pope John Paul II issued on the occasion of the papal visit in 1987. The book has two parts. Part one contains over 100 coloured photographs and summaries of the main messages and homilies on the occasion of the Papal visit. Part 2 recalls the spirit with which Chile lived the death of the Pope. “With this book we wish to perpetuate our affection and gratitude to a man who came as a messenger of life and a pilgrim of peace” Bishop Cristián Contreras Villarroel auxiliary of Santiago, said at the presentation of the book.
The archdiocese of Antofagasta will also hold a special Mass in the cathedral on Sunday 2 April presided by the Archbishop Pablo Lizama Riquelme. The diocese of Valdivia has organised a prayer vigil on Saturday 1 April followed by Mass presided by Bishop Ignacio Ducasse of Valdivia. The mass is for clergy, religious, members of parishes, movements and schools. The celebration will be a moment of encounter and reflection on the legacy of Pope John Paul II and the presence of God in the life of every person. During the vigil there will also be a video on the papal visit to Chile and the reading of excerpts from his teaching on the family, the poor, ecclesial communities and mission.
