ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Wave of attacks continues but hopes for peace and development in Mindanao are still a priority

Manila (Fides Service) - Tension has risen in Mindanao with two attacks in the past few days. After political turmoil in recent months with an unsuccessful coup to oust President Gloria Arroyo - promoting peace and talks between the government at the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels are priorities if the country is to live stability, security, political, social and religious harmony .
The first attack was a bomb blast on 27 March in Jolo in which nine people were killed and about 20 injured. Police are investigating to find those responsible. Suspects include rebel separatist group Abu Sayyaf or local extortion racket.
In the second explosion in Digos City on 29 March 17 people were killed. Suspect the pro-communist “New People's Army”, active since 1969.
Speaking to Congress Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said an anti-terrorism Bill presented to parliament in 2001 should be approved. Today 31 March at a meeting with members of the international community at the Philippines Development Forum in Tagaytay, the president asked also for more programmes for economic and social development in Mindanao. She said she hoped government/MILF meetings with in April would lead to a peace agreement before the end of 2006.
In the meantime the Church in Mindanao continues to lament the suffering caused to the people who cannot live a normal life. Catholic services assist the people and Christian communities also live in tension and fear.
Jolo is the base camp of Abu Sayyaf group on the international list of Islamic extremists terrorist organisations. A massive military army operation in the past year has caused much suffering the civilians. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 31/3/2006 righe 26 parole 265)
