Rome (Agenzia Fides) - In the Marian prayer of the Regina Coeli on Sunday May 26, 1996, the Holy Father John Paul II expressed himself as follows: "Today's celebration of the solemnity of Pentecost is saddened by the tragic news of the death of seven monks from the monastery Trappist of 'Notre-Dame d'Atlas' in Algeria, the latest in a series of deplorable episodes of violence that have long disturbed the life of the Algerian nation, without sparing our Catholic brothers. Despite our deep pain, we thank God for the witness of love given by these religious. Their fidelity and coherence honor the Church and will undoubtedly be a seed of reconciliation and peace for the Algerian people, with whom they were in solidarity" (see Fides, 29/5/1996). The seven monks of Tibhirine, murdered after weeks of captivity, were beatified in Oran, along with twelve other martyrs from Algeria, on December 8, 2018 (see Fides, 10/12/2018). Twenty-five years after their tragic death, an International Colloquium to be held in Rome on December 3 and 4 wants to collect the testimonies of those who knew them and the contributions of those who continue to receive theological, spiritual and pastoral inspiration through their writings. With a first day reserved for students, this colloquium wants to make their spiritual legacy known to the scientific community and stimulate work at the university level. The second day, open to a wider audience, aims to publicize the experience lived by these monks and contribute to the dissemination of their message through the Italian translation of their writings. Organized by the 'Association pour la protection des écrits des sept de l'Atlas' and the Scientific Committee of the' Écrits de Tibhirine ', in collaboration with the' Ateneo Pontificio Sant'Anselmo ', and with the support of the' Fondation des Monastères', this colloquium is under the high patronage of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
