VATICAN - Study seminar on 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines and the missionary spirit

Rome (Agenzia Fides) - On October 30th, the International Secretariat of the Pontifical Mission Society (PMS) and the Pontifical Filipino College of Rome will jointly hold a seminar to Celebrate 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines (1521-2021), and reflect on the spirit of mission in the Filipino faith tradition and the Pontifical Missionary Societies’ contribution.
From 9:30 am to 12:30 am Italian time, the Seminar will be held at the Filippino College and will be in English. In view of the limited number of participants present, the Seminar will be broadcast live via streaming, open to anyone who wants to participate.
After the introduction by the moderator and organizer, Fr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen OFMConv, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, is expected to greet the participants at the opening ceremony.
The first thematic speech on "How much missionary is a Filipino Catholic? The Spirit/Awareness of Mission in the Filipino Faith Tradition", is entrusted to Fr. Andrew Recepcion, professor at the Faculty of Missiology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. "The Mission in and of the Filipino Diaspora in Italy: An Overview and Reflections on Pastoral Activities", will be discussed by Fr. Greg Gaston, Rector of the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome.
The second report on "The Pontifical Missionary Societies in the Philippines. Brief Reflection from Historical Data and Pastoral Experiences" will be delivered, in connection from the Philippines, by Bishop Socrates C. Mesiona, MSP, DD, Vicar Apostolic Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa, Chairman Episcopal Commission on Mission.
"The PMS Projects for Faith and Mission Promotion in the Filipino Society", by Fr. Esteban U. Lo, LRMS, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the Philippines, followed by the PMS International Secretariats’ Contributions to the Filipino Church.
The concluding remarks will be entrusted to His Excellency Archbishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies. (Agenzia Fides, 27/10/2021)
