OCEANIA/ SOLOMON ISLANDS - A Seminar on priestly formation in Solomons discusses vocations, education and fight against AIDS

Thursday, 30 March 2006

Honiara (Fides Service) - What are the pastoral priorities in Solomons, how to face new problems which modern culture brings to parishes, schools and in the Catholic community at large? What subjects must formation focus on? These were some of the questions addressed by 30 priests of the Catholic Archdiocese of Honiara, gathered for the Priests Council Meeting held from 14 to 16 March, 2006 at Holy Cross Conference Hall, Honiara. Plans from the different Archdiocesan ministries were outlined and suggestions made, with a view to better reach people. Current issues - HIV/AIDS, elections, education, rising prices, training of trainers, etc were also points that were highlighted. While discussions were held in the mornings, the afternoons were devoted to sessions on the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation). Elizabeth Harrington, Education Officer with the Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Australia, conducted the workshop and animated the discussions. The participants reaffirmed the centrality of the Eucharist which they said is the heritage of the Year of the Eucharist proclaimed by the late John Paul II.
