Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - In Malawi, in particular in the districts of Zomba and Malaka, some young people who would have had no hope of contributing to the economic development of their country, acquire professional skills and, in some cases, even receive funds to start their own business. As part of the "Hope for Youth Project" promoted by the "Catholic Development Commission" (Caritas Malawi) of the Bishops' Conference of Malawi, young people are to receive professional qualifications as electrical fitters, welders, bricklayers and carpenters. The beneficiaries of this project also include young women from vulnerable groups. Christopher from the village of Nkasala in the Mlumbe tribal area in the Zomba district reports that he had the opportunity to take a masonry course. After completing his course, Christopher reports: "I had the opportunity to work in a construction company for over a year and this allowed me to gain experience: I have returned home and am now building my own house. Now I am able to support my family in all needs, which was not the case before". Climate change, on the other hand, is the focus of another project by Caritas Malawi with the title: "Climate Challenge Program Malawi" (CCPM). This project recently received the Community Empowerment Award by the organization Trocaire. The Climate Challenge Program Malawi (CCPM) project, which is currently being carried out in the four districts of Balaka, Machinga, Zomba and Chikwawa, aims to improve the population's resilience to current and future climate change. The project develops adaptation strategies and measures at the community level that aim to improve agricultural production and living conditions in rural areas, as well as the supply of food, water and energy. The project is also being carried out in the four counties with funding from the Scottish Government in collaboration with SCIAF and Trócaire. (EG) (Agenzia Fides, 12/10/2021)
