Rome (Fides Service) - The World Bank, through the Global Development and Learning Network GDLN, and Medical Missions for Children MMC have agreed to work together to help treat sick children in Latin America and the Caribbean where, according to the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF 34 out of 1000 die before they reach the age of five.
The agreement stipulates that via satellite and the Internet US doctors will provide medical consultation and assistance to doctors in Latin America treating children with serious pathologies.
Moreover 22 GDLN Centres in different parts of Latin America will supply resources and advertise the project. GDLN was formed six years ago. Its members, government and private organisations and NGOs form an Internet information exchange community which promotes development and learning.
In Peru for example the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru is the exclusive GDLN representative. Its GDLN PERU centre offers courses, seminars and diplomas at a distance.
Whereas the aim of Medical Missions for Children MMC is to transfer medical knowledge from those who possess it to those who need it in urban and rural areas of Latin America and the Caribbean. (AP) (30/3/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:22; Parole:248)
