Lima (Agenzia Fides) - The presidency of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference on September 22 had a meeting with the president of the Congress of the Republic, María del Carmen Alva Prieto, at the structures of the Congress of the Republic. During the meeting, the Church's willingness to help and collaborate with the Congress in particular in the social, educational and health sectors of the country was reaffirmed.
The meeting took place in a climate of fraternity, cordiality and social friendship. The Peruvian Church thus continues its agenda of meetings with the various organs of the Congress of the Republic to contribute to the construction of the common good of the country.
The meeting was attended by Monsignor Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, President of the Episcopal Conference and President of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM); Monsignor Robert Prevost, Bishop of Chiclayo and second Vice President; Monsignor Norberto Strotmann, Bishop of Chosica and general secretary; Father Guillermo Inca, Deputy Secretary of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference. The meeting also served to calm a certain popular tension created due to the many comments and debates after the death in prison of the head of Shining Path, which occurred a few days ago.
The Archbishop of Lima, Monsignor Carlos Castillo, had celebrated a mass on September 12 with the main leaders of the Special Group of Peruvian Intelligence, in the Cathedral of Lima, on the anniversary of the historic capture of Abimael Guzmán, leader of the Shining Path terrorist group. In his homily, the Archbishop said: "If we now have the possibility of a democracy, even with its problems, it is because you have sown that seed of hope for the country.
You are the strength we must have to continue that path of hope that you started on a Sunday like today. Let us do everything possible to be seeds of hope and be a miracle for our people". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 24/9/2021)
