EUROPE/PORTUGAL - Appointment of the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies, Fr. José Antonio Mendes Rebelo, MCCJ

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On July 11, 2021 Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, appointed Fr. José Antonio Mendes Rebelo, MCCJ (Comboni missionaries) National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Portugal for a five-year period (2021- 2026).
The new National Director was born on February 14, 1961 in Tézem, Vila Nova de Tazem, municipality of Gouveia, Portugal. He entered the Comboni Missionaries, made his first profession in 1982, his perpetual vows in 1985 and was ordained a priest on July 13, 1986. He obtained a licentiate in Theology and a specialization in Biblical Theology (1982-1987) at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome. He attended courses in drug addiction prevention, journalism, photography, IT and communication, as well as languages. He has been involved in missionary animation, served as army chaplain, coadjutor and parish priest in South Africa and Director of some missionary magazines. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 15/9/2021)
