AMERICA/BRAZIL - "Violence generates violence", the Catholic community calls for an end to clashes between police and Roma

Vitória da Conquista (Agenzia Fides) - The Office for Nomadic Pastoral Care of the Episcopal Conference of Brazil, published a note on the violence in the region of Vitória da Conquista, in the State of Bahia, which resulted in the deaths of two military police officers and four gypsies.
In the document, signed by the Bishop of Eunápolis and President of the Pastoral dos Nomads, Dom José Edson Santana de Oliveira, the Pastoral dos Nomads of Brazil espresse his condolences and solidarity with the victims and their families. At the same time, he denounces the climate of insecurity generated by these events, describing an "environment of insecurity and a feeling of injustice for the families of those affected".
"Peace must prevail", we read in the text, "violence generates violence" and demands "from the State that the action of the police should aim to identify and detain the culprits, without excess and without victimizing the innocent".
The situation is very tense, and the local press reports that the lack of precise information makes it difficult to clarify the case, as the local media generally give priority to the police version, which is however compared with the personal reports of the Roma community in the region.
