AMERICA/NICARAGUA - New arrests, "may the will of citizens and the human rights of all Nicaraguans be respected"

Managua (Agenzia Fides) - "Given the electoral panorama, we must demand respect for the popular vote with the available means, so that the elections are credible, just and transparent", says the "Justice and Peace" Commission of the Archdiocese of Managua, in a statement sent to Fides. In fact, tension continues to increase in Nicaragua, where in recent days many prominent members of the opposition have been arrested, against President Daniel Ortega, in government since 2007, who is running for the presidential elections on November 7. This is why, writes the Commission, "as Christians we ask that the will of citizens, expressed in free demonstrations, be respected and that the human rights of all Nicaraguans be respected", especially those who are "unjustly detained". According to the local press, the government holds 26 people, opposition leaders in the electoral process. Twenty-four of them do not know where they are being held, they cannot communicate, receive food, visits from relatives or defense lawyers, despite the unanimous request for respect for their human rights that has now gone beyond national borders.
Even the European Parliament ruled two days ago on the "repressive spiral" that Nicaragua is experiencing and several MEPs called for sanctions to be applied against the regime of Daniel Ortega, who arrested all the presidential candidates and also several businessmen, journalists, peasants and student leaders. The Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua recommended in a document, published after the arrests of several opposition politicians, to avoid the institutionalization of arbitrary and illegal arrests, the "persecution" of opponents and the media, and denounced "the persistent situation of injustice" (see Fides, 17/6/2021).
