AFRICA/KENYA - American nun teaches sign language to children and adults with hearing and speech deficiencies in Mombasa

Nairobi (Fides Service) - Maryknoll missionary Sister Caroline Stanfill from Richmond USA, teaches sign language to children and adults with hearing and speech deficiencies in a parish in the archdiocese of Mombasa, in Kenya.
“We hope also to teach them catechism in this way to prepare them to receive the sacraments” Sister Caroline told CISA new agency in Nairobi. Sr Caroline is trained as a teacher of ASL American Sign Language will remain in Mombasa for about nine months. She is also teaching local volunteer teachers of SL to organise similar programmes in other Mombasa parishes. “The ideal would be to have an SL teacher in every parish” said Sr Caroline.
Thanks to this American missionary children and adults with hearing and speech deficiencies are discovering the joy of taking part in church life and being able to communicate with others in church at home, school and work.
