Sepahua (Agenzia Fides) - On July 28, Peru celebrates its 200 years of independence, and therefore of its birth as a Nation. The anniversary of the Bicentennial falls in a period marked by little desire to celebrate due to the strong impacts that the Covid-19 pandemic is causing, but still strengthening the gaze towards the future, with the hope of building a country according to the values of its Republican constitution.
This look to the future is specified in the so-called "Bicentennial Plan", made up of strategic measures agreed by the National Agreement and various political and social forces and other institutions in the country. The Plan invites us to build the future through 6 strategic axes that project Peru towards 2050: Fundamental rights and dignity of the people; Opportunities and access to services; State and government; Economy, competitiveness and employment; Regional development and infrastructure; Natural resources and environment. Faced with this proposal, the missionary institutes, especially those who work in the areas farthest from the capital, have asked themselves how to carry out their work in order to respond to the strategy of the Bicentennial Plan, especially considering that each area is very different geographically, socially, economically and culturally from the others. Fides received the response of the Dominican missionaries, who work in the Peruvian forest.
Radio Sepahua and "Selvas Amazonicas" have come together to give a small contribution, from the Amazonian perspective, through micro videos that directly and concretely show the commitment of individuals and communities on those development axes.
The first video, released and shared by social media these days, is related to the economic progress of the population. Throughout history, the Peruvian forest has presented worrying economic indicators. Poverty at a national level, in 2020, reached a third of the population and the Amazon is no stranger to it. The situation of poverty and extreme poverty, is tackled with initiatives that, starting from one’s own family, seek alternatives to improve the economy. The Bicentennial Plan sets a number of goals, one of which is for Peruvians to come out of poverty. From the forest an overall vision is asked, everyone's participation in the Bicentennial Agenda is asked. Thanks to this joint work between Selvas Amazónicas and Radio Sepahua, one will know the experience of individuals and entire families committed to taking better care of their small cropland, the only source of livelihood.
The work of the missionaries manages to create real communities of life and development, where solidarity is real among the population. Thanks to formation, evangelization and commitment to social initiatives, one can see a community solidarity response.
