Kuala Lumpur (Agenzia Fides) - The Malaysian Catholic Bishops' Conference (CBCM) has provided for the donation of one million Malaysian rupees (approximately US $ 241,000) to the anti-COVID-19 Solidarity Fund, launched by Together with other religious organizations and NGOs, the conference offers support to this initiative which aims to set up other initiatives and programs to fight the pandemic, prevention and cure.
This was reported to Agenzia Fides by Father Michael Chua, a priest who works within the Bishops' Conference. He explains: "This is an emergency fund in response to the urgent request for assistance from our public hospitals and healthcare workers for the provision of various medical equipment to cope with the high number of critically ill COVID-19 patients". The donations collected will be used to equip themselves with medical equipment and personnel. The Bishops of Malayisia sent a message to all the faithful urging them to support this cause and make donations to this fund, said Father Chua. The Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia guarantees that 100% of the funds raised will be used for the purposes indicated. The fund is jointly supported by multi-ethnic and multi-faith organizations.
"This is an emergency fund to which we are contributing in order to help health workers to provide life-saving equipment for 142 hospitals", adds Bishop Bernard Paul, of the diocese of Malacca Johore. This is one of the ways in which the Church in Malaysia is working to combat the pandemic and its effects, always in a spirit of solidarity and charity. The Diocesan Caritas of Malacca Johore has launched an aid program food for people affected by the lockdown. Several parishes run food banks, with grassroots church communities working at the forefront to identify families in need.
Among the initiatives reported to Fides, the Catholic Archdiocese of Kuching donated 10,000 face masks and 6,200 insulating medical gowns to Sarawak General Hospital, thanks to the contribution of Catholic benefactors and friends across Sarawak State.
Archbishop Simon Poh, at the head of the diocese of Kuching, coordinated a special collection together with Bishop Joseph Hii, of the diocese of Sibu and Bishop Richard Ng of the diocese of Miri: "The spirit is to offer material and spiritual support to frontline workers in Sarawak during this period of COVID-19", he said, calling for new collaborative initiatives.
