AFRICA/EGYPT - Coptic Churches participate in the subscriptions for the celebrations of Eid al Adha, the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice

Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Daily coexistence between Muslim and Christian communities in Countries with an Islamic majority is often marked by problems and accidents, but it is also strewn with gestures of mutual generosity and codified customs that express attention and respect, especially in conjunction with their respective religious holidays.
Also this year - Egyptian media such as the Copts United website report - several Coptic, Orthodox and Catholic parishes, symbolically participated in the purchase of some "bonds" offered by the Ministry of Religious Endowments in view of the "Feast of Sacrifice" (Eid al Adha), the Islamic holiday that this year is celebrated on July 21. In particular, in the province of Minya four parishes have purchased 13 shares of the "sacrificial bonds" from the provincial section of the Dicastery for Religious Endowments, for a value of 26 thousand Egyptian pounds. The Coptic Orthodox parish of the Virgin Mary has joined similar subscriptions in Abu Kabir, in the Governorate of Sharkia, and a Coptic Catholic parish on the Red Sea. The feast of Eid al Adha commemorates the test of obedience to God made by Abraham, who showed himself ready to sacrifice the life of his son Isaac, if this corresponded to God's will. The ritual sacrifice that is practiced during the holiday recalls the substitute sacrifice carried out with a ram by Abraham/Ibrāhīm, completely obedient to the divine disposition to sacrifice his son to God, before being stopped by the Angel. In Islamic communities, various forms of collection of offerings have developed to allow families who cannot afford to buy the animal (usually a bovine, a sheep or a goat) to participate in the Eid al Adha sacrifice according to ritual customs.
