EUROPE/ITALY - International conference on “Women Theologians: in what Europe?” To promote a fruitful inter-weaving of religious freedom and the secular state

Thursday, 23 March 2006

Rome (Fides Service) - “Women Theologians: in what Europe?” is the title of an international conference 30 March - 1 April 2006 promoted by Coordinamento Teologhe Italiane CTI and sponsored by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers which will take place at the Sala del Consiglio della Provincia di Roma, Friday 31 at Pontificia Facoltà Marianum, Saturday 1 April at Sala Giulio Cesare in Campidoglio.
Participants will include 150 women theologians of various Christian denominations from 20 different European countries, as well as representatives of Judaism and Islam. This is a completely new event for Italian political and church institutions which intends to help dialogue among religions at a difficult time when Europe is facing certain challenges as well as working towards growth and unity. It is hoped that theological reflection can promote fruitful interweaving between religious freedom and the secular state.
“Forty years after Vatican II it is clear that access for women to teach theology and their full insertion in ecclesial life represent one of the profound transformations initiated by that gathering. Women are also an important resource for guaranteeing the tradition of the faith within social life. For centuries women have transmitted the faith in the institution of the family: they are ready to do so also in other civil and religious institutions”, said CTI president Marinella Perroni.
