AFRICA - The Church in Africa wants to get out of its precariousness and achieve financial self-sufficiency

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - Concrete actions, fundraising, setting up of income-generating activities, large-scale projects, are all actions resulting from the will of the churches in Africa to achieve financial self-sufficiency. "The Church in Africa wants to get out of its precariousness. It no longer wants to be a financially assisted church - writes to Agenzia Fides Fr. Donald Zagore, Ivorian priest of the Society for African Missions. However, what kind of ecclesial financial autonomy on an economically isolated continent? Can the Church in Africa be successful where African States have failed?" "The economic situation of our countries is unfortunately more and more disastrous, continues the missionary. Economic reality is suffocating, poverty is on the rise. Social discontent in some countries of the continent is almost at its peak due to the fact that life is becoming more and more expensive with ever increasing prices".
Fr. Zagore explains: "the foundations for a dignified life, access to water, electricity, health, education and employment are precarious assets. 60 years after political independence, economic independence is far from a reality. The continent's resources continue to be plundered by foreign multinationals. Poverty is the daily destiny of the African populations. Will the Church be able to take up the challenge of financial autonomy in such a context? If the Church in Africa accepts this challenge - concludes the missionary - then it will be able to teach African States a great lesson and would probably contribute to improving the living conditions of African populations".
