Asuncion (Agenzia Fides) - "Today we face two wars: the pandemic and corruption. We must emerge victorious. With vaccines and with the moral life of justice and peace". This is what the Archbishop of Asunción, Mgr. Edmundo Valenzuela said during the celebration of the Te Deum, thanksgiving Mass and supplications for the Fatherland, in commemoration of the 210th anniversary of national independence, which was celebrated yesterday May 14 at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
Archbishop Valenzuela said that the national structure "is no longer adequate", "no longer withstands the pressure" and that social and environmental imbalances threaten the future of the country. Furthermore, he said that the high rate of corruption "will bring the country to the brink of a serious crisis if there are no alternatives for dialogue and debate". For this reason, the prelate urges the creation of a "national path" to find solutions to the historical claims of various sectors and to the general discontent of citizens due to the lack of response from the authorities to social problems.
"We need lasting and effective solutions, we must fight against corruption and demand decent work for the growth of our people", said the Archbishop in the presence of the Head of State, Mario Abdo Benítez, and other authorities. "The country is demanding strongly for medicines in public hospitals, in quantity and quality compatible with the extra money allocated", he added, stressing that vaccines against the disease are more than necessary, as well as efficient health policies.
The conclusion: Mgr. Valenzuela called the reform of the State "vital" to reduce unnecessary spending, and complained that unfortunately no progress is being made "beyond pompous public statements and meetings between some parties". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 15/5/2021)
