AMERICA/MEXICO - Catechists in the reality of Covid-19: the Holy Spirit continues to blow in different ways

Tuesday, 11 May 2021

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - "If it is true that the world is now united under the same pandemic, the means of dealing with it take particular forms in each region. Covid-19 has also reached Mexico and there is no way to evade or deny it. Although the Mexican authorities initially said that they should not be alarmed by this coronavirus, civil conscience has caused many citizens to choose to lock themselves up in their homes". With these words, the Redemptorist religious Agustín Cantú Drauaillet, C.Ss.R. tells Agenzia Fides about his experience as a catechist. "Not many days passed - he continues - and our churches were closed, everyone shared the same situation. The ongoing missions were temporarily canceled. How to serve the Redeemer now? How to do catechesis? This question exploded in the minds of many Mexican Redemptorists, and there have been many answers to continue proclaiming the Lord. Among these live broadcasts of the Eucharistic celebrations on social networks, processions with the Blessed Sacrament in vehicles, the celebration of a youth mission each in his own home ... In some communities it was possible to respond to parishioners who asked for confessions and even to the sick in hospital, naturally following the necessary health measures. In catechetical centers and parishes, our activity has not stopped". The Redemptorist religious Agustín Cantú Drauaillet concludes his testimony with these words: "Despite the increase in infections and the number of people trying to stay at home, the Holy Spirit continues to blow in different ways and we are open to follow in his footsteps. We will not stop accompanying our brothers and sisters, because we know that the Redeemer has a lot to say especially to the abandoned who are isolated in their Mexican homes".
