Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - "Africa’s access to vaccines is one of the crucial points to contain the pandemic. In the face of a global emergency, the only possible response must be global. Africa cannot be excluded. We need a vaccination plan. Besides being correct, doing so is a guarantee for our safety, because only in this way we can stop the spread of the virus and its variants". This is the appeal launched by Don Dante Carraro, director of Doctor with Africa CUAMM. And the first vaccines are on the way. Carlos Agostinho do Rosario,at the head of the Mozambican government, was thrilled the other day when he announced the arrival in the country of the first 200,000 doses of the vaccine. And the same goes for Ghana, which has already received 600,000, and Senegal, 200,000. "This is the beginning of hope also for the African continent that, in order to have sufficient immune coverage, should receive at least 1.3 billion vaccine doses by 2021", underlines the director of CUAMM, who recalls how the first doses must be administered "to local colleagues, doctors, nurses, midwives, and support workers in the health sector (administrators, drivers, cleaners)", because "as we have seen in the case of Italy, they are the 'heart' around which the entire health system of a country revolves". CUAMM has launched a concrete initiative to bring the vaccine to 20,000 colleagues, doctors and health professionals in the countries where we are present in Africa. "The initial overall challenge for a complete vaccine (two doses) is 400,000 euros, in the hope of being able to reach many more". The objective of the CUAMM intervention is to bring the vaccine to the last mile in 51 districts of 6 countries where it is present: Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Uganda, for a total population of about 5 million. inhabitants (Agenzia Fides, 7/5/2021)
