Cochabamba (Agenzia Fides) - Following the recent local elections, the chairman of the Bolivian Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Ricardo Centellas, asked the elected candidates "not to disappoint the trust that people have shown in them". "I hope that all promises made will be kept and that the main needs of the population in terms of health, education and housing will be met", he stressed. In a video message, Archbishop Centellas said he was aware that "there is a lot to be done to consolidate democracy". At the same time, he reminds us that "we must all commit ourselves to thinking of the common good. There are certainly many outstanding tasks, but the bottom line is that everyone who accepts an office is completely independent in advocating the good". The Archbishop of Sucre recalls what the Bolivian Bishops Conference had told the candidates at the beginning of March: "the winners of the elections will have to fulfill their electoral promises, as it is a moral obligation, because the hopes raised among the people must not be disappointed (see Fides, 4/3/2021). In Bolivia a new chapter in democratic history begins in a changed context without a political majority. The past local and regional elections mark the end of the electoral calendar following the crisis in 2019 that led to the resignation of President Evo Morales. Because of the pandemic, the election dates had to be postponed twice. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 4/5/2021)
