Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - Every year from April 19th to 25th Argentina celebrates the "Week of the Indigenous Peoples". The week of action is intended to point out the reality of these peoples, promote commitment to the protection of their rights, preserve the beauty of the forms of life and appreciate the cultural diversity. The theme chosen for this year is "Territory, cry for justice". "Together with the Indigenous Communities and Pope Francis", says the note sent to Fides, "we are striving for a society that values and respects these peoples more and more and that recognizes the wealth that they offer us. In addition, we join in the 'Cry for justice' that derives from it".
The National Aboriginal Pastoral Team (ENDEPA), stresses in its declaration entitled "Indigenous Peoples, Wealth for Humanity": "in this period of pandemic, despite the difficulties of social distancing, we continue to be committed and confident, together with the Native Peoples, sharing their cry for respect for their territories, for the right to indigenous education, health, economy, participation, autonomy, identity and self-determination".
In the text, ENDEPA denounces: "We are hurt by the discrimination, mistreatment, repression of the authorities in the province of Formosa against the indigenous peoples who live there; we are concerned about the marginalization and violence caused by mining projects that are proliferationg across the national territory; we denounce the violent and unjust evictions in the province of Jujuy, and the many other hardships that indigenous peoples have to endure across the country and which have aggravated in the context of the pandemic.
We speak out against the destruction of our mother earth, discrimination and the destruction of indigenous cultures".
ENDEPA members point out that at this time of the pandemic, the most vulnerable people suffer most and reaffirm their commitment to accompany the struggles of the Indigenous Peoples "to claim their rights, their territories, in profound respect for their vision of the world".
