Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - The Don Orione Work celebrated the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first missionaries in Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). It was Father Angelo Mugnai who was the first to reach Bonua in 1971, followed by many other missionaries who have continued their commitment to this day and will continue to do so", said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides.
The celebrations were held in the parish of Bonoua in the presence of the Superior General of the Don Orione Works, Father Tarcisio Vieira, the Provincial Father Jean-Baptiste Dzankani and the oldest missionary currently in Ivory Coast, Don Pasquale Poggiali. In the morning a procession began from the school of the Sisters of Santa Rita, which arrived after having traveled some streets of the city, to the parish, where the Holy Mass was celebrated.
The homily was deivered by the general councilor of the Congregation, Father Pierre Assamouan Kouassi, (a "son" of the mission; and after the Bishop of Grand-Bassan, Mgr. Raymond Ahoua) who, based on the Gospel in which Jesus invites his disciples to bear witness to his message and share the good news to the ends of the world, underlined how this commitment is still carried out today by the Orionine missionaries in Ivory Coast, remembering all those who have carried out the own mission here.
"In Ivory Coast - explains Don Fulvio Ferrari, general councilor of the Don Orione Works - there is a great flowering of initiatives and vocations. Africa has received the Christian message very well and almost has a desire to be evangelized. There is an openness to spontaneous faith and the pastors here do not encounter the doubts and distant beliefs that are typical of European countries, where philosophies such as relativism often prevail over faith".
