Chiapas (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Chiapas (Mexico) have expressed concern about the socio-political situation in the area and for the increase in violence in the country. In particular, they deplore politicians' pursuit of their personal interests and the infiltration of organized crime-related groups into politics.
With a view to the elections on June 6th, in which a total of 163 representatives will be elected, the church representatives express themselves in a joint appeal by the bishops Jaime Calderón Calderón de Tapachula; Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez from San Cristóbal and Fabio Martínez Castilla from Tuxtle Gutiérrez, Chiapas.
In their document, the bishops recall that in the previous electoral processes there had been social division and exasperated confrontation, even with violent clashes, which is why they appeal to political representatives to promote peace and unity. Every citizen is called upon to cast his or her own voice responsibly, informed and critically, while always thinking of the common good of society in Chiapas.
Meanwhile, the violence in the Mexican state does not stop. In the Veracruz region, the violent death of an Accion Nacional (PAN) candidate for mayor, who was murdered in the state of Oaxaca, caused a sensation. Ivonne Gallegos was killed by a group of previously unidentified men, according to the police in Ocotlán de Morelos, a town 30 km south of the capital Oaxaca, while a man who was accompanying her was injured.
