Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - "Principle-based management is good to the extent that the State establishes clear principles. But on a practical level, in the implementation of these principles, these are not respected", deplores His Exc. Mgr. Ignace Dogbo Bessi, Metropolitan Archbishop of Korhogo and President of the Episcopal Conference of Ivory Coast, with regards to the lack of rigor in the application of the measures taken to block the spread of Covid-19.
Archbishop Ignace remarked: "let's say we have to stay a meter away, wash our hands regularly and wear masks, but then we see the authorities who should apply these indications and do not respect them, people who see this let themselves go to indiscipline and the disease can spread widely".
Stressing the fact that anti Covid measures are respected within the Church, Archbishop Ignace encourages the State to raise awareness among the population and to enforce the various restrictive measures to break the chain of the virus.
Regarding vaccination, the Archbishop of Korhogo states that "the Church has never asked anyone to be vaccinated or not. We assume that in the face of a disease, an epidemic or a pandemic, those who want to protect themselves must do so. The Church is in society, if the State asks to be vaccinated, the Church will not oppose it".
Ivory Coast recorded as of March 16 a total of 212 new cases of Covid-19 out of a total of 2,209 tests carried out or 9.6% of positive cases, 495 cured and one death.
The country records a total of 38,120 confirmed cases of which 35,111 recovered, 214 deaths and 2,795 active cases. In addition, since the start of the vaccination campaign against Covid-19, the number of people vaccinated - still as of March 16 - has risen to 17,448. (S.S.) (Agenzia Fides, 18/3/2021)
