Friday, 12 March 2021 desecration   local churches

Ibagué (Agenzia Fides) - Today, March 12, at 11.30 am local time, a rite of reparation celebrated by the Archbishop, His Exc. Bishop Orlando Roa Barbosa, after the desecration that took place in recent days. On the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, a group of feminist women broke down the doors of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, while the parishioners were inside, and filled the walls of the sacred building with writings and graffiti.
In a statement released after the incident, the Archbishop recalls the Magisterium of the Church aimed at enhancing "the feminine genius" and the role of women in building the Church and society. He therefore condemns such acts of vandalism, assuring however that, following the example of Jesus, the Church "will continue to defend the dignity of women, to recognize her important role in ecclesial life ... to denounce everything that goes against integrity, nature and dignity of women".
"The Church of Ibagué complains and mourns the vandalism against its Cathedral - underlines the Archbishop - a sacred place destined to encounter God and which has witnessed the development of the Tolimense people, a cultural heritage that must be valued, preserved and protected". The Archbishop also recalls that any attack on a sacred place is considered by canon law as a profanation; therefore, it must be repaired with a penitential act. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 12/3/2021)
