Brasilia (Agenzia Fides) - "This is its mission: to be an instrument of love in a polarized world permeated by hatred! Women are at the forefront of the mission". This is what the Counselor of the Episcopal Pastoral Commission for Missionary Action and Inter-ecclesial Cooperation of the Bishops' Conference of Brazil (CNBB) Sister Sandra Amado, says, summarizing the role of consecrated women in the missionary world. "The image of that nun kneeling in front of a military to defend her people, in Myanmar, becomes an icon of the action of women who go on missions with an open heart, to embrace, encourage, animate and serve those who need it most within our society", she adds in the note sent to Fides.
As part of International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, the Commission for Missionary Action and Inter-Church Cooperation is launching a series of live conversations on the theme: "Women in mission". The appointment is set for the 8th of each month - or for the next working day if the 8th should fall during the weekend - at 3 p.m local on the CNBB YouTube channel. The first broadcast will take place today, March 8 and the last one on December 8, the day of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Sister Sandra Amado meets today the President of the Conference of Religious of Brazil (CRB), Sister Maria Inês Ribeiro, on the theme "Current portrait: the female presence in the ecclesial mission". It will be remembered that the said nun was appointed in January by Pope Francis Consultor of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life of the Roman Curia.
The "Women in Mission" project was conceived by the Commission to give visibility to the contribution of women in the mission of the Church in Brazil and in the world, since most of the time it is women who carry out missionary activities within the Church and their role is very current. In this regard, Sister Sandra Amado underlines: "The conversation between women wants to put on the agenda the missionary action of the feminine dimension of the Church. As women, they actively participate in building the kingdom of God in contemporary society. The women were courageous and fearless in the mission entrusted to them by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in serving the poorest and most needy of the Church of their time and in their geographical place. Without the collaboration of women, the mission of the Church would not be so active and current in the life of our people". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 8/3/2021)
