Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - The magistrate in charge of the investigation into the murder of the Italian Ambassador to Kinshasa, Luca Attanasio, policeman Vittorio Iacovacci, and their Congolese driver Mustafa Milambo, (see Fides, 23/2/2021) has been killed.
"Local sources say that the magistrate in question was returning from a meeting held in Goma as part of the investigation into the security of the area and in particular into the murder of the Ambassador of Italy and his two companions", confirm to Fides missionary sources operating in North Kivu, in the east of the DRC, of which Goma is the capital.
In a statement sent to Fides, the local NGO CEPADHO (Center for Peace, Democracy and Human Rights Studies) claims to have "learned with great dismay of the murder of Major William Assani, magistrate at the Rutshuru Military Court on 2 March, who was the victim of an ambush near Katale, on the Rutshuru - Goma road (from where he was returning)".
"This crime was perpetrated by unidentified gunmen, one of whom was neutralized during the response launched by the FARDC (Congolese army)", the statement said.
"CEPADHO vehemently condemns this despicable and barbaric act, to be considered a real sabotage to the judiciary, given the commitment and self-denial that characterized the Military Magistrate in the Territory of Rutshuru. Our Organization, which says it is shocked and scandalized by the death of Major William Assani, urges the authorities to start credible investigations to find the murderers, so that the perpetrators of this crime do not go unpunished", CEPADHO concludes.
