AMERICA/ECUADOR - The elections show a country divided in two, the Bishops call for peace and fraternity

Quito (Agenzia Fides) - After the continuous updates of the results of the presidential elections in Ecuador held on Sunday 7 February, the Correa current candidate, Andres Arauz, seemed to have obtained 32% of the vote yesterday, which means that none of the candidates were able to get more than 40% of the votes, as required by the electoral law in force, making a second round likely. Yaku Pérez and Guillermo Lasso, the other candidates, are waiting for the official end of the count to find out if they will be in the second round. For now, Yaku seems to be more likely to pass. One thing was clear: the presidential elections show Ecuador divided into two political blocs. Half of the country supports Andrés Arauz and the other half is with Yaku Pérez.
The Episcopal Conference of Ecuador waited until the evening of February 7 to express itself by means of a press release calling on the electoral authorities to respect the popular will expressed by the vote and to all political forces so that they actively contribute to the dialogue.
"It is the time for peace - the Bishops wrote - for reconciliation and fraternity; of an outstretched hand, of respect and of listening with an open heart. This is the time to be firm in your own convictions, free from violence or exclusion. This is the moment of the certainty that an Ecuador in which people live as brothers constitutes a country with a future". They also stressed that those who win "must have the courage to erase from their language and from their heart any feeling or desire for revenge. And whoever loses must have the dignity to recognize their defeat and to put their ideas and intelligence at the service of the nation". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 10/2/2021)
