ASIA/HOLY LAND - In Palestine “Wing for Healing”: Italian tele-medicine for peace

Rome (Fides Service) - A project “Wing for Healing”, sponsored by TELBIOS, leading Italian company in tele-medicine services and networking backed by AISPO, Italian Association for Solidarity among Peoples with the patronage of the Foreign Ministry will enable Palestinians to access prompt and effective medical interventions in their local hospitals. The goal is to have a communication network between hospitals which face daily emergencies and territorial difficulties in places such as Nablus, Gaza and Beit Jala (Bethlehem), where movement of patients is extremely difficult.
Eight hospitals, six run by the Palestinian government, one private clinic and an Italian Hospital on Israeli land are now part of a tele-medicine network to connect specialists in ISDN video-conference and allow Palestinian doctors and some Italian colleagues to request via the web tele-consultations and appointments with other specialists to discuss relative clinical data in real time.
Moreover two hospitals have been equipped with a tele-pathology system for pathological anatomy diagnosis at a distance. The network has been tested and is ready for use.
The following hospitals are involved Beit Jala Government Hospital (Beit Jala); Jenin Government Hospital (Jenin); Government Ramallah Hospital (Ramallah); Rafidiah Government Hospital (Nablus); Shifa Government Hospital (Gaza); European Hospital (Gaza); Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation (Beit Jala); Holy Family Hospital (Nazareth).
Equipment was installed for video-conference, multimedia posts for exchange via the Internet of clinical information and fruition of e-learning courses. Personnel for healthcare and IT services were trained locally. (AP) (14/3/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:28; Parole:309)
