Washington (Agenzia Fides) - In response to the announcement by the US State Department to return to designating Cuba as a “sponsor of terrorism”, Mgr David J. Malloy, Bishop of Rockford, president of the Commission for Justice and Peace international conference of the United States Bishops’ Conference (USCCB), released a statement, sent to Fides.
“For decades, in collaboration with the Holy See and most of the international community, the Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States has called for collaboration and mutually beneficial relations between the United States and Cuba, as well as the full lifting of the embargo economic against the island nation – writes the Bishop -. As President of the USCCB Commission for Justice and International Peace, I would like to express my profound disagreement with Secretary Pompeo’s decision to add Cuba to the list of sponsoring states of terrorism ”.
“As our Commission has said many times – he continues -, we need more relations between the United States and Cuba, not less, in order to build mutually beneficial commercial, cultural and scientific ties, which will produce lasting prosperity for both. our nations. I pray that we never tire of working towards these goals and that both sides recognize the need for friendship and collaboration. “
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on 11 January that the United States will return Cuba to the list of “sponsoring terrorism” states, accusing it of “repeatedly providing support for acts of international terrorism”, hosting US fugitives and leaders of Colombian rebel groups. The island was removed from that list in 2015 by the Barack Obama administration during the historic thaw of relations between Washington and Havana. In a climate of strong tension that the American country is experiencing, 9 days after leaving office, President Donald Trump rekindled the tension with Cuba that would complicate any effort to revive the rapprochement with Havana.
