Matagalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of the diocese of Matagalpa, Mgr. Rolando Álvarez, urged the Nicaraguan politicians to seek the common good and not just their own private interests, since in the country "coherence is urgently needed". He also said that politics should be seen as a "vocation to service" and not just as a simple "strategy and organized action".
During Sunday mass celebrated in the Cathedral of Saint Peter the Apostle of Matagalpa, Bishop Alvarez reaffirmed that politics "is a vocation to service", it promotes the common good and prevents "the so-called ruling classes to appropriate the right to decide everything without taking into account the feelings of the people. In this sense, politics is not the simple art of managing power, resources or crises".
During his homily, the Bishop stressed that "a country cannot be rebuilt on the basis of hatred, refusal, clashes or disqualifications" and invited the various political movements to "respect the spaces and decisions of each group, association or party, which seeks the construction of a new Nicaragua with a face and proposals that guarantee the future".
Mgr. Álvarez is an authoritative voice of the Nicaraguan Bishops' Conference (CEN) and a strong critic of President Ortega's regime. Since the protest events that began in April 2018, he has always called for the unity of Nicaragua, so that the interests of the nation take precedence over personal interests (see Fides, 5/11/2020 and 29/12/2020). A situation that could not be created in view of the presidential elections of 2021. Mgr. Álvarez has repeatedly urged to avoid violence and to build the future of Nicaragua in peace (see Fides, 7/10/2020), but unfortunately his appeals remained unheard. According to the latest news, the level of violence is still increasing.
Yesterday the Diocese of Granada sent Fides the news of the assassination of the brother of Mgr. Jorge Solórzano, Bishop of this diocese, shot dead in the street.
Diego Solórzano, 75, was killed in front of the company he ran in western Managua while driving his truck. "Two individuals on motorcycles shot him", said the National Police. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 12/1/2021)
