EUROPE/ITALY - Inauguration of new St John of God Home for the terminally ill: 450sq mt. eight residential units

Rome (Fides Service) - A new St John of God Home for the terminally ill to be inaugurated on Wednesday 15 March at the St John of God Hospital in Venice will provide beside medical treatment also psychological counselling and social, informative and educational assistance.
The Inauguration ceremony will start with a Mass at 9.30 in the Aula Magna of the Hospital presided by Cardinal Angelo Scola, Patriarch of Venice. There will follow the presentation of the services offered and the opening and blessing of the Home in the presence of religious and civic authorities.
The Home, dedicated to the founder of the St John of God Hospitaller Brothers whose anniversary occurs around this time, is situated in the restructured St Rafael Archangel Hospital. The new home which is part or a general renovation of the Hospital reflects the vocation of the Order, with the creation of a unit with the mission of being a place of welcoming and treatment offering a therapeutic approach to diverse difficulties in assistance and above all to improve life quality of the terminally ill through prevention and alleviation of pain, early diagnosis, correct valuation and treatment of pain and connected physical, psycho-social and spiritual problems.
The new structure has an area of 450 sq. mt., and consists of eight residential units furnished as far as possible like a home for the comfort of the patient and the assisting family member: each unit has two beds, a bathroom and some have a small kitchen. The Home includes a community kitchen and community hall for recreation or other activities. The Home will soon have four more beds to assist people in a permanent vegetative state.
The St John of God Hospitaller Brothers have served the sick and the poor in Venice since 1715. With 120 beds and about 1,500 patients admitted every year the Hospital S. Raffaele Arcangelo is an important point of reference for treatment and rehabilitation. It has 5 Operative Rehabilitation Units and clinics, a special service for elderly people, a Parkinson Centre and other department for different pathologies.
