AMERICA/VENEZUELA - The first Venezuelan Bishop to die of Covid-19

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - Yesterday, Friday 8 January 2021, His Excellency Monsignor Cástor Oswaldo Azuaje, OCD, Bishop of Trujillo, victim of Covid-19 died. As the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference informs, he is the first Venezuelan bishop to die from the pandemic.
In the note sent to Fides, the Episcopal Conference announces "with sorrow and hope" the death of the Bishop, expressing "our fraternal closeness to his family, priests, men and women religious, and to all the faithful of the Diocese of Trujillo". The Bishops give tank to God "for his ecclesial service which he carried out with joy and devotion", asking him to grant him "eternal rest and incorporate him into eternal beatitude". In the statement the Venezuelan Episcopate shows its "closeness in prayer to all those who have died from the scourge of the Covid-19 pandemic".
Born in Maracaibo, in the State of Zulia (Venezuela) on October 19, 1951, Mgr. Cástor Oswaldo Azuaje made his solemn profession among the Discalced Carmelites (OCD) in 1974, studied in Spain, Israel and Rome, specializing in moral Theology at the Alphonsian Academy. He was ordained a priest on December 25, 1975. His pastoral ministry took place in Costa Rica (1978-1984) and in Venezuela, where he held various positions within his Congregation. On 30 June, 2007 he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Maracaibo, receiving episcopal ordination on 31 August 2007. On 3 April, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Trujillo. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 9/1/2021)
