AMERICA/DOMINICAN REP. - Violence against women and families continues to worsen: "Let's sow peace in 2021"

Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Santiago and Chairman of the Dominican Bishops' Conference, Mgr Freddy Bretón Martínez, hopes that the country will have a judicial system that lives up to its name by 2021. He also expressed the hope that violence will decrease at all levels in the new year and that young people will be given more opportunities for work and education. In his public statement, Archbishop Bretón Martínez also hopes that citizens' awareness will grow and respect will prevail, so that aggression, rape and femicide can be effectively combated.
The Archbishop of Santiago also referred to the words of Mgr.Jesús Castro Marte, Bishop of the diocese of Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia, who on Sunday, January 3, publicly condemned the violent deaths of two women in the first days of the New Year. "The violent death of two women at the very beginning of 2021, in less than 48 hours, causes helplessness and sadness. Please stop with this situation! Our society is declining every day. As long as we endure this situation, how will our poor society end?" wrote the Bishop on his Twitter account.
Mgr. Castro Marte added: "the issues of violence against women and families continue to aggravate the wound and cause distress to hundreds of families in the Dominican Republic, we should try to sow peace in 2021". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 5/1/2021)
