Huancayo (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Pedro Barreto Jimeno, Archbishop of Huancayo, describes the recent demonstrations in the country (see Fides 12 and 16/11/2020) as a kind of “rebirth” of the people on the initiative of young people.
"Something new is being born and young people have responded in a very positive way on behalf of everyone. There are families in which their children have raised awareness of the new awakening of society", said Cardinal Barreto in an interview with Radio Nacional.
He added that true democracy is emerging and politicians need to learn that they should not take advantage of it, but recognize that democracy is a common good.
The Cardinal noted that there have been politicians who have made politics a tool for personal gain, "but the majority of the country has shown what true democracy is and these young people have made their message of hope heard, in the midst of pain".
However, he urged "to be vigilant: the death of two young people as a result of the brutal behavior of some police officers cannot go unpunished".
As part of the "Resuscit Peru" initiative (see Fides, 16/9/2020), the Bishops' Conference invites civil society to promote and strengthen the action of solidarity and calls on ecclesial realities, academics and society, to promote an effective dialogue with the State.
