ASIA/KOREA - Resignation and appointment of bishop of Chunchon, Korea

On November 21, Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Chunchon, Korea, presented by Bishop Lucas Kim Woon-hoe.
The Holy Father appointed as bishop of the same diocese the Reverend Simon Kim Ju-young, of the clergy of Chunchon, until now director of the Church History Research Centre and secretary of the Reconciliation Committee of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea.
Msgr. Simon Kim Ju-young was born on 3 March 1970. After secondary school he entered the major seminary and attended courses at Suwon Catholic University, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in theology (1993-1998).
On 15 December 1998 he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Chunchon.
After ordination he first served as parish vicar in Jumunjin, Imdang-dong and Juklim-dong (1998-2001). He then studied in Rome for a licentiate in Church history and cultural heritage at the Pontifical Gregorian University (2001-2006). He was subsequently head of the diocesan office for education (2006-2008); parish priest in Soyangro (2008-2010); head of the diocesan office for vocations (2010-2014); and parish priest in Smusoop (2014-2017). From 2006 to the present he has served as director of the Church History Research Centre and secretary of the Reconciliation Committee of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea.
