EUROPE/ITALY - 4th Day for European University Students, meeting with Pope Benedict XVI: “May the Gospel open new ways for cooperation among the peoples of Europe and Africa”

Rome (Fides Service) - Speaking after the midday Angelus prayer on Sunday March 5, Pope Benedict XVI mentioned that next Saturday, 11 March, at 5 p.m. in the Paul VI Audience Hall, a Marian Vigil will be held, organised by Rome's young university students. Many students in other European countries and in Africa will also be taking part, thanks to radio and television link-ups. “It will be a favourable opportunity to pray to the Blessed Virgin that the Gospel will open new ways for cooperation among the peoples of Europe and Africa,” the Pope said.
«Christian humanism, a path for new cooperation between Europe and Africa» is the theme of this 4th Day for European University Students promoted by the Council of the Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Europe and its aim is to promote a new stage in cooperation between Europe and Africa animated with the light of the Gospel and oriented towards new forms of scientific-cultural collaboration which are the path for authentic and integral development. European and African university students want to work together to meet the expectations of the new generations and build a civilisation of love.
About 10,000 students from Rome and all over Italy will gather in the Paul VI Hall where they will be joined by the Pope. Participating in the even through radio and television link-ups students in: Dublin, Fribourg, Madrid, Munich, Salamanca, St Petersburg, Sofia, Abidjan, Antananarivo, Nairobi and Owerri, Nigeria. During the encounter Pope Benedict XVI will consign to a few representatives of the students copies of his first encyclical. The prayer vigil will be preceded on March 9 by a Study Seminar on University Cooperation promoted by the Italian Office for Development Cooperation and the Conference of University Rectors. (S.L.)
