AFRICA/IVORY COAST - "Women peacemakers": African Union initiative in view of the presidential elections

Thursday, 29 October 2020 women   peace   elections

Abidjan (Agenzia Fides) - "We wanted this great gathering to demonstrate that women are a force and that they can become peacemakers. Everyone can be messengers of peace in their environment", said Joséphine Charlotte Mayuma Kala, special representative of the president of the African Union Commission in Ivory Coast, in her speech at the "Women in mediation talks" meeting.
In view of the presidential elections in Ivory Coast on Saturday 31 October, actions in favor of peace are increasing in the country, and women do not want to stay on the sidelines in the search for this ideal. They responded favorably to the appeal of the African Union and UNESCO for a day of mobilization and awareness of peace which was held on 27 October.
The participants were urged by various messages to take an active part in the peace process in Ivory Coast, also by the association of women mediators of the African Union (Femwise) who shared the experiences of their respective countries.
"We have come alongside the women of Ivory Coast to show them our support, our solidarity, our encouragement and tell them that now is the time to stand up; the country, the nation needs them. Women represent love, they are bearers of life, they are everywhere in society and it is their task to stand up today and say no to violence", said Marie Louise Baricako of Burundi, member of Femwise Africa.
The meeting was one of the strong moments of communion and fraternity experienced between women of all political, ethnic and religious backgrounds of Ivory Coast, who came in large numbers (more than 500). Another important moment that marked the meeting was the start of the caravan of peace that will cross the city of Abidjan for three days. (S.S.) (Agenzia Fides, 29/10/2020)
