AMERICA/HONDURAS - The National Director of the PMS: "It is important to make the link between charity and evangelization known"

Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - "There is great joy and enthusiasm in all diocesan Missions Directions for missionary October. This is a great opportunity to invite all the baptized to become aware of their vocation and their commitment to collaborate in the great work of God". This is what Father Bernardino Lazo, National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Honduras, declares to Agenzia Fides, speaking of the atmosphere of the celebrations that are currently accompanying the Missionary Month in the Central American country, in view of World Mission Day, which will be celebrated al lover the world on October 18, 2020.
"It is very important - explains Fr. Bernardino - to make this link between charity and evangelization known, which is found in the vital experience of the people of God. The poor brothers share what little they have with the poorest, almost in the style of the first Christian communities. All the particular Churches with their pastors - he continues - even before the pandemic, have always been committed to helping the local population amidst a thousand difficulties, in a context characterized by a high rate of poverty, with very vulnerable health services, high unemployment and crime rate".
Among the initiatives at the service of the most needy, Fr. Lazo speaks of an experience born in the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa, called “SOS missionary”, which provides food, medical, psychological and spiritual assistance. "At a national level - says the National Director - during the pandemic we have helped many faithful in difficulty, by doing psychological and spiritual formation online. In many parishes, priests and religious have worked to ensure that the less fortunate faithful are guaranteed basic necessities".
Speaking of the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Honduras, Father Bernardino states that "it will continue to renew itself as long as it is in a constant attitude of missionary openness 'ad gentes' towards the geographical, socio-cultural and existential peripheries. All the baptized are called to contribute to awakening the missionary conscience of the people of God. We must start from pain, anguish and hopes and respond to their cries, questions, hunger and desire for God. Our goals and efforts - concludes Fr. Lazo - must be based on the response to how to make possible the co-responsibility within the universal mission of the Church in all areas of the Country as there are still many people who do not know the Lord".
