Vatican City - "The Pontifical Mission Societies are entirely dependent on God's Providence, through the free offerings of the faithful. We help the life of the local Churches of mission territories, dependent on the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, because they are communities that are growing, young Churches that must develop and need help in all areas: ecclesial structures, parishes, pastoral centers, schools, teaching staff, catechists". This is what Fr. Tadeusz J. Nowak, OMI, Secretary General of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith, one of the four Pontifical Mission Societies, says to Agenzia Fides, in view of World Mission Day which will be celebrated on Sunday, October 18.
Father Novak thus explains the meaning of the universal collection which, during World Mission Day, constitutes the Universal Solidarity Fund at the PMS. "With this fund, we make ourselves close to Catholic communities living in poor countries. It should be noted that, despite poverty, the generosity of the population is not lacking. The faithful take care of the needs of the Church and the PMS give them a valid contribution. The PMS do not constitute a financial organization which distributes financial aid but a network which, ideally formed by all the Catholics of the world, supports, through prayer and charity, the life of these small Churches, especially those most in need. In this sense, the PMS are an instrument in the hands of God at the service of the Pope, to allow each baptized person to respond to his missionary vocation. This is indeed a clear call for all the baptized. We are all missionaries and participate in the evangelizing mission of the Church".
On this path of awareness, a model for our time is constituted by the figure of Venerable Pauline Jaricot (1799-1862), the foundress of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, whose miracle has recently been recognized, which opens the way for her beatification. "Venerable Pauline Jaricot humbly and ardently dedicated her time to the missions. She is a figure of extraordinary importance for the history of the Church's mission. She had a deep trust in God and despite the sufferings and injustices she suffered, she never lost faith because she drew her strength from the Eucharistic and from the Eucharistic Adoration. She is a truly an inspiring figure. Her humility and fidelity to God are the roots of her missionary commitment. Through her work, she only intended to give glory to God.
