Miami (Agenzia Fides) - "I personally believe that as long as Ortega, Murillo and their repressive government are there, there is no room for fair, democratic and transparent elections in Nicaragua": said the Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, Mgr. Silvio Báez, in an interview with German television channel Deutsche Welle (DW), on the parliamentary elections in Nicaragua in November 2021. According to the Nicaraguan Bishop, "this would be just another lie to prolong the suffering of the people in Nicaragua. I do not see and believe that the regime will grant free elections, according to democracy", he affirmed.
For Archishop Báez, transparent and fair elections in Nicaragua are only possible after the exit of Daniel Ortega and his government. "From the beginning, the Catholic Church identified the possibility of a democratic solution as the only effective and lasting one", emphasized the Auxiliary Bishop of Managua.
In this context, Archbishop Baez recalled the first dialogue in April 2018, and the statement of the Catholic Church:
"We welcome the creation of the so-called Blue and White National Unity Network (UNAB). This body brings together various parties and associations that are committed to the hope of achieving the goal of restoring democracy in Nicaragua, a necessary and important step for the future of the country", said the General Secretary and spokesman for the Bishops' Conference of Nicaragua, Bishop Abelardo Mata Guevara, Bishop of Esteli (Nicaragua (see Fides, 8/10/2018).
Yesterday the European Parliament approved a resolution in which the EU threatened consequences if "there is no democratic change in Nicaragua". Mgr. Baez explains: "If sanctions are imposed, they should apply to Ortega and his family individually, not Nicaragua as a country. If sanctions are to be used to exert pressure on democratic change and ways of justice, everything that can be done is important and must be done urgently, because time flies and Nicaragua needs international solidarity and pressure", emphasizes the Bishop.
