Bkerké (Agenzia Fides) - Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai welcomes the news of a future framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel on the demarcation of land and sea borders between the two Countries. On Sunday, October 4th, during the Sunday homily of the mass celebrated at the Patriarchate of Bkerké, the Primate of the Maronite Church emphasized that this negotiated solution could put an end to the "series of attacks and conflicts between Lebanon and Israel, in accordance with resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council".
Details of the planned framework agreement, which were already negotiated on July 9, were only announced by the media in the last few days. The meetings planned between the parties involved will take place in Naqoura on the UN mission base in southern Lebanon under the aegis of the office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon.
The border dispute between Lebanon and Israel affects an area of approximately 850 square kilometers, which is claimed by both Countries. In these areas, Lebanon had issued offshore licenses to "ENI-Total and Novatek" company.
Regarding the current crisis situation in Lebanon, Patriarch Rai recalled that in Lebanon there is "no government, no reconstruction plan, no reforms, no respect for the constitution, and no scruples". This forces one to "find a breach in this block" without depending on the interests of other countries. "None of you", said the Patriarch to the country's politicians, "may make Lebanon a mere ally of this or that Country in order to include it in their wars and their political strategies".
