Hong Kong (Fides Service) - “I am grateful to the Lord for calling me to be a channel of his grace and I know that going on mission means giving but also receiving” said Ms Yan Jia Yi, a member of the Catholic Association of Lay Missionaries of Hong Kong who recently received her mandate for mission in Cambodia. According to Hong Kong diocesan bulletin Kong Ko Bao Ms Yan Jia Yi, received the mission cross and mandate on 26 February in the parish church of St Peter in the presence of about 500 people including parishioners and other members of the Association. She received the mandate from the hands of the Bishop of Hong Kong Joseph Zen, one of 15 new Cardinals recently named by Benedict XVI. In his homily Cardinal Zen referred to the first encyclical written by Pope Benedict XVI Deus caritas est and he said: “Our mission is to carry the love of God to the world, and to the most helpless people in particular”.
The Hong Kong Catholic Association of Lay Missionaries is the only organisation in the diocese which has the right to send its members on mission abroad. Formed in 1988, the Association has already sent 9 lay missionaries to different countries in Africa and Asia. The members of the Association strive to “obey Christ’s command to go on mission”. The Association organises mission formation courses in theology, missiology, sociology, economy, basic mission techniques and holds regular meetings for sharing of mission experience.
