Istanbul (Agenzia Fides) - Also in 2019 the so-called "hate speech", speeches that express denigration and incitement to contempt towards individuals and human groups identified on a national, ethnic or religious basis, found space in the Turkish press. This is confirmed by the report on “Hate Speech” in Turkey published annually by the Hrant Dink Foundation, based in Istanbul.
The Foundation, which bears the name of the Turkish journalist of Armenian origin murdered in 2007, has since 2009 been conducting investigations into the expressions of religious hatred and racism that appear in the Turkish media. According to the report by the newspaper "Agos", an Armenian-Turkish bilingual newspaper published in Istanbul, the report of the Hrant Dink Foundation for the year 2019, and based on the monitoring of 500 national, regional and digital newspapers, recorded an average of 19 articles a day containing disparaging speeches towards groups and individuals. The ethnic or religious insults and incitements to hatred that appeared in the Turkish press in 2019 targeted 80 different ethnic groups or religious communities. The insulting expressions spread through the Turkish media, as documented by the report of the Hrant Dink Foundation, were in particular against Armenians, Syrians and Greeks.
