Bogotà (Agenzia Fides) - During the virtual meeting of the Presidents of the 22 American Bishops' Conferences, gathered in CELAM, connected via the internet on 21 and 22 September (see Fides, 22/9/2020), the preparations for the event that will commemorate the 13th anniversary of the V General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops (CELAM), held in Aparecida, Brazil, from 13 to 31 May 2007, with the intervention of the Holy Father Benedict XVI, was also discussed.
The Archbishop of Tegucigalpa, Cardinal Oscar Rodríguez Maradiaga, explained that various Commissions have been organized with specific objectives. The planning of the event counts on the support of the Mexican Episcopal Conference, the country chosen as the site of the commemoration, if this can take place with the participation of people. This will depend on the conditions of the pandemic in the countries of the continent. An alternative plan was also designed to celebrate it in a virtual form.
According to the Cardinal, the event will be on the missionary disciples who set out, with synodal and community discernment, to seek new paths. For this reason, the anniversary represents a huge challenge. The steering committee, the general secretariat, the preparatory commission and other working groups dedicated to the choice of contents, communication, economics and the liturgical aspect were formed.
It is expected that for the months of July and August 2021 an "Instrumentum Laboris" can be presented as a product of synodal and community discernment, to carry out the event from 22 to 26 November 2021. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 25/9/2020 )
