Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic Church of Malawi has started preparation for World Mission Day which this year is celebrated on October 18, with new forms due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was in fact decided to make extensive use of Catholic media such as Radio Maria Malawi, where the Bishop of Mangochi, His Exc. Mgr. Montfort Sitima, spoke, and Luntha Television, with the intervention of the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies of Malawi, Fr. Vincent Mwakhwawa.
Speaking at the end of the televised Holy Mass, Fr. Mwakhwawa stressed the need for Catholics in Malawi to join in prayer and contribute to evangelization and the spread of the Word of God.
Fr. Mwakhwawa also added that, despite the global pandemic affecting people's daily lives, "there is an opportunity, in the difficulty of the disease, to show love".
"The world is struggling with the coronavirus. As we wear masks that hide our smiles, our hearts should be open, giving to the needy and the Church, to extend the preaching of the gospel. We are optimistic that Mission Sunday will be a success this year", said Fr. Mwakhwawa.
A representative of the laity in Malawi, Dr. Mary Shawa, stressed the need for every baptized person to support the missionary work of the Church in proclaiming the Word to the ends of the world. Dr Shaba added that this task could be achieved not only through contributions to the Church, but also through daily works that manifest Christ in the faithful.
"We have yet another opportunity for us Christians in Malawi to play a vital role in preaching the Gospel not only through donations, but also our works. It is time to be with the Church, and these three months of preparation have given us plenty of time to really prepare ourselves so that we can have a special Mission Day in October this year", said Dr. Shaba.
Representing young people, Mallen Machika, a medical student, encouraged the lay faithful, especially young people, to read the message of the Holy Father for World Mission Day. "The Holy Father urges us to respond to God's call in this time of pandemic and to say firmly: 'Here I am, send me' to share love and hope with others in this period of the Covid 19 pandemic", Mallen said.
