AFRICA/MALAWI - "Excellent results with online teaching; now the challenge is to reopen face-to-face courses", says the Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University

Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - The Vice-Chancellor of the Catholic University of Malawi Rev Dr. George Buleya during a seminar for academic staff, praised the faculty for their commitment to continue teaching, despite the closure of the university caused by COVID-19, through the use of an online platform that allowed students to continue their studies from home.
"We are doing quite well and we must forge ahead, this is not the university that fails, many universities have failed to provide solutions of teaching students during this time of crisis but we were able to register high numbers of students learning online this is no mean achievement", said Rev. Dr. Buleya, urging teachers to do even more.
In agreement with the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of Academic Affairs, Fr Dr. Dominic Kadzingatchire urged the lecturers to prepare as the university is expected to open the second semester on September 14 with fourth-year students in face-to-face teaching, while other groups will have to continue with online learning until October.
The Director of Academic Affairs added that the university is ready to join COVID-19 preventive measures with students on campus.
The one-day workshop for lecturers at the University aimed at drilling lecturers with new teaching techniques using computer equipment.
The Catholic University of Malawi embarked on teaching students online in April following government orders to close schools in the country as a preventive measure to further spread of novel coronavirus. Students at the university were able to write their mid and End of semester exams on google classroom with a high rate of students being to learn from the platform.
