Bogota (Fides Service) - Cardinal Francisco Javier Errázuriz Ossa Archbishop of Santiago and President of CELAM the Council of Latin American Bishops’ Conferences and CELAM general secretary Bishop Andres Stanovnik of Reconquista have sent a message to men and women religious of enclosed contemplative Orders asking them to pray that the 5th CELAM General Conference will bear abundant and lasting fruit. The general conference will be held in 2007 at the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida (Brazil) with the slogan "Disciples and Missionaries of Jesus Christ so our countries in him may have Life". Pope Benedict XVI is expected to be present for the opening of the Conference.
“We are preparing for this important event for the Church on our continent - the message reads - with the active participation of the people of God”. In this sense the CELAM president and secretary call on brothers and sisters in enclosed contemplative Orders also to take an active part, to reflect and send suggestions to the respective bishops’ conferences, but more important they urge Religious to pray for the event, since prayer is the main service of people living a life of consecration: “Accompany us with the power of your prayer on our way to the 5th CELAM Conference; accompany us, praying that the light of the Holy Spirit may enlighten our minds and fill us with a desire to contemplate Jesus Christ, to love our brother and sisters, particularly the suffering and the afflicted and the ardour to proclaim Him to the people of our time and doing so we may be faithful to our vocation as disciples and missionaries so in Him our countries may have life". The Cardinal asked the religious in particular to pray the special prayer composed by the Pope, “so that all this work may be lived as an authentic expression of ardent and active faith”.
