School reform: Bishops express concern

Sucre (Agenzia Fides) - "I want to express my deep concern about the events that are happening due to the coronavirus and how the number of people affected, suspected and infected is growing, especially in the San Roque penitentiary": this is how the letter by Mgr. Jesús Juárez, Archbishop emeritus of Sucre begins, asking for urgent measures to be taken against all those at risk, and to improve assistance to those deprived of their freedom.
"I ask that detainees awaiting trial for minor crimes be given substitute measures, such as house arrest. Similarly, an urgent measure must be taken towards all those suspected of having the virus and for those who have been tested positive for Covid-19 and do not require hospitalization. They should be brought to another location to be properly treated and put under quarantine", continues the letter sent to Fides.
Mgr. Jesús Juárez concludes with a thank you: "I support the efforts made to assign a doctor 24 hours a day and provide medicines. The psychological support that those deprived of their freedom need is essential".
Bolivia, despite quarantine and government measures, has experienced several outbreaks of Covid-19, according to data from the local press. The Church, which has always assisted prisoners with organized penitentiary pastoral care, has been blocked in efforts to be able to do something for this sector of the population.
